"How to Be a Man"
"He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8
The purpose of humanity can be understood through four themes: relationship, representation, responsibility, and reverence. Each is rooted in Scripture and reveals God's design for our existence.
Relationship - Created for Fellowship with God
Representation - Reflecting God's Image in the World
Responsibility —Stewardship Over Creation
Reverence —Living for God's Glory
Redemption - Restoring Our Purpose Through Christ
True masculinity is active stewardship. A godly man doesn't wait to be told what to do; he takes responsibility for what God places in his hands.
The Model: Jesus, the Perfect Man

THE MAN AND HIS HOBBIES
Biblical Foundations:
•1 Corinthians 10:31 “So, whether you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
•1 Timothy 4:4 “...everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.”
•James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…”
•1Timothy 6:18 “...[God] richly provides us with everything to enjoy.”
•Principle of Sabbath / Rest
Intrinsic and extrinsic value:
Intrinsic - hobbies can be __________________ to be __________________ by a good God.
Extrinsic - Hobbies can __________________ us valuable lessons and create opportunities to build redemptive __________________ with others.
Dangers to Avoid:
I’m too __________________ for a hobby.
My __________________ don’t __________________ God.
My hobbies __________________ me (time, money, affections). = __________________
Best Practices:
•Find __________________ hobbies.
•Keep first things first.
•Set __________________ (time, money, affections)
Questions to ask:
1.What hobbies do you enjoy for yourself? With your spouse? With your family? With others?
2.Do you have a healthy relationship with hobbies? How can you tell?
3.How can you have a better relationship with your hobbies?
4.How can you connect your hobbies with the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31)?

THE MAN AND HIS WORK
From Garden to Glory: The Sacred Side of Work
What does it mean for a man with a biblical worldview to be ‘ALL IN’ at work?
“There is not a square inch over the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is sovereign of all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’” – Abraham Kuyper
Work is… “Rearranging the raw materials of a particular domain to draw out its potential for the flourishing of everyone.” - Tim Keller
“Work is any activity, whether paid or unpaid, that creates order out of chaos or makes something useful out of the raw materials of God’s creation.” – Jordan Raynor
At its simplest, a theology of work is our understanding of how and why our work matters to God.
A theology of work undergirds the choices we make about what kind of work we do, why we do it, and how we do it. All these things, of course, matter to God.
Best Practices:
1. Develop a Biblical worldview of work that is rooted in a theology of Work found in Genesis 1 and 2.
•Why do you work?
•How do you work?
•What is your top priority while at work?
•What is your ‘big picture’ goal for your work?
•How do you define success?
•Whose praise or approval are you working for?
•How is your work reflecting God’s image and likeness as creator, protector, provider, healer, and redeemer?
How does our work reflect God?
Does your work cultivate? – This is to nurture, support, partner with, mentor, encourage, help, promote, and enrich.
Does your work fill? - create good things; bring the earth to its full potential or maximize its potential total by filling it with God's goodness and glory.
Does your work subdue? - make the earth more useful for human beings' benefit and enjoyment?
Does your work rule over? - implement God’s sovereign rule on earth as it is in heaven.
•How is your work causing flourishing and bringing fruitfulness?
•What injustices are you subduing and ruling over at work?
2. Scratch off the Kingdom of God at Work.
We scratch off the surface by…
•Weeding out what doesn’t belong in the kingdom of God
•Planting what belongs in the kingdom of God
•Representing and reflecting your king
“According to the Scriptural perspective, work becomes a waystation of spiritual witness and service, a daily traveled bridge between theology and social ethics. In other words, work for the believer is a sacred stewardship, and in fulfilling his job he will either accredit or violate the Christian witness.” John Calvin
3. Identify your top three “thorns’ at work.
4. Make an anti-bucket list. (Based on the thorns you just mentioned, make a list of things you will refuse to do, such as being controlled by materialism, worshipping work, and focusing on the temporary over the eternal.
5. Use Genesis 1, Colossians 3:15-17, 22-25, and 2 Thessalonians 3:10-15 as a way to assess your theology of work regularly.
Saturday Evening Session
Speaker: Paul Sorber
THE MAN AND HIS CHURCH
Church (Ekklesia) = called out ones, an assembly (PEOPLE)
•Local church = “greet the church in their house” (Romans 16:5; Galatians 1:1-2)
•Universal church = All believers who received the Spirit of Christ at salvation, from Pentecost to the second coming (1 Corinthians 12:12-14)
NOTE: The gates of hell will not prevail against the church (Matthew 16:18)
MISSION OF THE CHURCH
Ephesians 4:11-16
Note: Circle what God designs the church to do:
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherd, and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of
God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
Why is this important then and now, according to 4:14?
WAYS THE CHURCH / ASSEMBLY OF BELIEVERS CAN HELP YOU IN YOUR SPIRITUAL LIFE:
*How do/can we equip you, build you, mature you, grow you???
BEST PRACTICES
1. __________________________________________________________
2. __________________________________________________________
What are you going to do with what you know?
•How is the church doing at equipping you?
•How are you doing in terms of being equipped?
•Are you a bodybuilder?
•Your level of being equipped? Equipping others?
THE BIBLE ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CHURCH IN YOUR LIFE:
Romans 16:5 - Greet also the church in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in Asia.
Galatians 1:1-2 - Paul, an apostle—not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— 2 and all the brothers who are with me, To the churches of Galatia:
1 Corinthians 12:12-14 - For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. 14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many.
Matthew 16:18 - And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Forever and ever the kingdom is yours
Christ Be Magnified
Were creation suddenly articulate
With a thousand tongues to lift one cry
Then from north to south and east to west
We’d hear Christ be magnified
Were the whole earth echoing His eminence
His name would burst from sea and sky
From rivers to the mountain tops
We’d hear Christ be magnified
O Christ be magnified!
Let His praise arise
Christ be magnified in me
O Christ be magnified
From the altar of my life
Christ be magnified in me
When every creature finds its inmost melody
And every human heart its native cry
O then in one enraptured hymn of praise
We’ll sing Christ be magnified
I won’t bow to idols
I’ll stand strong and worship You
And if it puts me in the fire
I’ll rejoice ‘cause You’re there too
I won’t be formed by feelings
I hold fast to what is true
If the cross brings transformation
Then I’ll be crucified with You
‘Cause death is just the doorway
Into resurrection life
If I join You in Your sufferings
Then I’ll join You when You rise
And when You return in glory
With all the angels and the saints
My heart will still be singing
And my song will be the same
SATURDAY MORNING
God Is For Us
We won’t fear the battle, we won’t fear the night
We will walk the Valley with you by our side
You will go before us, You will lead the way
We have found a refuge, only You can save
Sing with joy now; our God is for us
The Father’s love
Is a strong and mighty fortress
Raise your voice now, no love is greater
Who can stand against us
If our God is for us?
Even when I stumble, even when I fall
Even when I turn back, still Your love is sure
You will not abandon, You will not forsake
You will cheer me onward
With never-ending grace
Neither height nor depth can separate us
Hell and death will not defeat us
He who gave His Son to free us
Holds me in His love
As I Go Your Way (Aleph)
Blessed are those whose way is blameless
Who walk in the law of the Lord
Blessed are those who keep His testimonies
Who seek Him with their whole heart
They do no wrong
But follow His ways
As they obey
I will praise You Lord
I will praise You Lord
With an upright heart Teach me to obey
I will keep Your word
I will keep Your word
Oh for-sake me not as I go Your way
Oh that my ways would be established
Help me to learn and obey
Fixing my eyes on all Your commandments
So I will not be ashamed
You’ve laid them down
For My heart to keep
So carefully
SATURDAY NIGHT
Praise
I’ll praise in the valley, praise on the mountain
I’ll praise when I’m sure
praise when I’m doubting
I’ll praise when outnumbered,
praise when surrounded
Cause praise is the water my enemies drown in
As long as I’m breathing, I’ve got a reason to
Praise the Lord, oh, my soul
Praise the Lord, oh, my soul
I’ll praise when I feel it
and I’ll praise when I don’t
I’ll praise ‘cause I know You’re still in control
‘Cause praise is a weapon,
It’s more than a sound
Praise is the shout that brings Jericho down
As long as I’m breathing, I’ve got a reason to
Praise the Lord, oh, my soul
Praise the Lord, oh, my soul
I won’t be quiet, my God is alive
How could I keep it inside
Praise the Lord, oh, my soul
I’ll praise ‘cause You’re sov’reign,
praise ‘cause You reign
Praise ‘cause You rose
and defeated the grave
I’ll praise ‘cause You’re faithful,
praise ‘cause You’re true
Praise ‘cause there’s nobody greater than You
The Jesus Way
If you curse me, then I will bless you
If you hurt me, I will forgive
And if you hate me, then I will love you
I choose the Jesus way
If you’re helpless I will defend you
And if you’re burdened,
I’ll share the weight
And if you’re hopeless, then let me show you
There’s hope in the Jesus way
I follow Jesus, I follow Jesus.
He wore my sin, I’ll gladly wear His name
He is the treasure, He is the answer
Oh, I choose the Jesus way
If you strike me, I will embrace you
And if you chain me, I’ll sing His praise
And if you kill me, my home is heaven
For I choose the Jesus way
And I choose surrender, I choose to love
Oh, God, my Savior,
You’ll always be enough
I choose forgiveness, I choose grace
I choose to worship, no matter what I face
I choose the Jesus way,
I choose the Jesus way
I choose the Jesus way,
I choose the Jesus way

You’ve shown up a thousand ways
And Your character has never changed
Forever worthy and deserving of them all
Your reputation is of grace
And in Your kingdom mercy reigns
One God with a thousand names
Forever worthy and deserving of them all
We sing Adonai, El Shaddai,
God Almighty
We sing Jehovah Rapha,
Elohim, King of Kings
With every title that You claim
You proved it in the life You gave
More powerful than any grave
Forever worthy and deserving of it all
We sing Jesus Christ, Son of God,
Holy Messiah
We sing Emmanuel, God with us,
Prince of peace
We praise Lamb of God, Deliverer,
Risen Savior
We cry Hallelujah, Lion of Judah
is coming again
There is power in Your name
There is power in Your name
Oh God, our God
Be enthroned upon our praise
Be enthroned upon our praise
Oh God, our God
We sing Adonai, El Shaddai,
God Almighty
We sing Jehovah Rapha,
Elohim, King of Kings
We praise the Great I Am,
Alpha and Ome - ga
Beginning and the end
We cry Abba Father,
Jehovah Jireh, our Provider
We breathe Yahweh
It’s Your name, it’s Your praise
THURSDAY NIGHT
The Lord’s Prayer
Father let your kingdom come
Father let your will be done
On Earth as in Heaven
Right here in my heart
Give us this day our daily bread
Forgive us forgive us
As we forgive the ones
who sinned against us
Forgive them
And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from the evil one
Let your kingdom come
It’s yours it’s yours all yours all yours
The kingdom the power the glory are yours
It’s yours it’s yours all yours all yours
Forever and ever the kingdom is yours
Christ Be Magnified
Were creation suddenly articulate
With a thousand tongues to lift one cry
Then from north to south and east to west
We’d hear Christ be magnified
Were the whole earth echoing His eminence
His name would burst from sea and sky
From rivers to the mountain tops
We’d hear Christ be magnified
O Christ be magnified!
Let His praise arise
Christ be magnified in me
O Christ be magnified
From the altar of my life
Christ be magnified in me
When every creature finds its inmost melody
And every human heart its native cry
O then in one enraptured hymn of praise
We’ll sing Christ be magnified
I won’t bow to idols
I’ll stand strong and worship You
And if it puts me in the fire
I’ll rejoice ‘cause You’re there too
I won’t be formed by feelings
I hold fast to what is true
If the cross brings transformation
Then I’ll be crucified with You
‘Cause death is just the doorway
Into resurrection life
If I join You in Your sufferings
Then I’ll join You when You rise
And when You return in glory
With all the angels and the saints
My heart will still be singing
And my song will be the same
SATURDAY MORNING
God Is For Us
We won’t fear the battle, we won’t fear the night
We will walk the Valley with you by our side
You will go before us, You will lead the way
We have found a refuge, only You can save
Sing with joy now; our God is for us
The Father’s love
Is a strong and mighty fortress
Raise your voice now, no love is greater
Who can stand against us
If our God is for us?
Even when I stumble, even when I fall
Even when I turn back, still Your love is sure
You will not abandon, You will not forsake
You will cheer me onward
With never-ending grace
Neither height nor depth can separate us
Hell and death will not defeat us
He who gave His Son to free us
Holds me in His love
As I Go Your Way (Aleph)
Blessed are those whose way is blameless
Who walk in the law of the Lord
Blessed are those who keep His testimonies
Who seek Him with their whole heart
They do no wrong
But follow His ways
As they obey
I will praise You Lord
I will praise You Lord
With an upright heart Teach me to obey
I will keep Your word
I will keep Your word
Oh for-sake me not as I go Your way
Oh that my ways would be established
Help me to learn and obey
Fixing my eyes on all Your commandments
So I will not be ashamed
You’ve laid them down
For My heart to keep
So carefully
SATURDAY NIGHT
Praise
I’ll praise in the valley, praise on the mountain
I’ll praise when I’m sure
praise when I’m doubting
I’ll praise when outnumbered,
praise when surrounded
Cause praise is the water my enemies drown in
As long as I’m breathing, I’ve got a reason to
Praise the Lord, oh, my soul
Praise the Lord, oh, my soul
I’ll praise when I feel it
and I’ll praise when I don’t
I’ll praise ‘cause I know You’re still in control
‘Cause praise is a weapon,
It’s more than a sound
Praise is the shout that brings Jericho down
As long as I’m breathing, I’ve got a reason to
Praise the Lord, oh, my soul
Praise the Lord, oh, my soul
I won’t be quiet, my God is alive
How could I keep it inside
Praise the Lord, oh, my soul
I’ll praise ‘cause You’re sov’reign,
praise ‘cause You reign
Praise ‘cause You rose
and defeated the grave
I’ll praise ‘cause You’re faithful,
praise ‘cause You’re true
Praise ‘cause there’s nobody greater than You
The Jesus Way
If you curse me, then I will bless you
If you hurt me, I will forgive
And if you hate me, then I will love you
I choose the Jesus way
If you’re helpless I will defend you
And if you’re burdened,
I’ll share the weight
And if you’re hopeless, then let me show you
There’s hope in the Jesus way
I follow Jesus, I follow Jesus.
He wore my sin, I’ll gladly wear His name
He is the treasure, He is the answer
Oh, I choose the Jesus way
If you strike me, I will embrace you
And if you chain me, I’ll sing His praise
And if you kill me, my home is heaven
For I choose the Jesus way
And I choose surrender, I choose to love
Oh, God, my Savior,
You’ll always be enough
I choose forgiveness, I choose grace
I choose to worship, no matter what I face
I choose the Jesus way,
I choose the Jesus way
I choose the Jesus way,
I choose the Jesus way
